Marble Cake Recipe | Pretty zebra cake

Wondering why the name says Zebra? Haha! You will get to know it pretty soon. Zebra/Marble cake looks like a pretty swirled vanilla and chocolate layered cake which may seem very difficult to make but it turns out to be very easy. It is also known as marble cake as it represents the swirly marble texture upon baking. You will need two batters- vanilla and a cocoa batter. To make the process easy, what we do is prepare a basic vanilla batter and divide it into two equal halves. Then, mix in some chocolate or cocoa in one of the halves. The swirls of vanilla and cocoa batter make this cake the most beautiful one.


The basic vanilla sponge cake batter

  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1 cup powdered sugar/ healthy sugar substitutes (as preferred)
  3. 2 teaspoons vanilla essence/extract (optional)
  4. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  5. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  6. 1/2 cup butter/ healthy butter substitutes
  7. 1 pinch salt
  8. 1 cup milk/buttermilk

For the cocoa batter

  1. Any chocolate of your choice/ 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  2. 2 teaspoons chocolate essence(optional)


  1. Preheat the oven at 180° C and prepare a baking tray by spraying butter/oil and lightly flouring.
  2. Sieve together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl and keep aside.
  3. Whisk butter and sugar till light and fluffy.
  4. Add vanilla essence and milk and whisk again.
  5. Now, add the dry sieved mixture and mix well until no lumps remain. Add more milk if required to reach a desired flowing consistency.
  6. Divide the batter into two equal halves.
  7. In one of the halves, add cocoa powder or melted chocolate of your choice. Mix well.

Making of the zebra swirls

  1. Pour some vanilla batter (about 1 tablespoon) in the center of the baking tray followed by the same quantity of the cocoa batter exactly at the center of the vanilla batter. You will observe that the vanilla batter spreads outwards. Repeat the process until you are finished with both the batters.
  2. Grab a toothpick, immerse it at the center and drag it outwards. Make 5-6 strokes each time starting from the center. This will give it an eye-catching look.

  1. Top it with some cocoa chips. (Optional)
  2. Bake in a preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
